World War II memorial
This is at the World War II memorial in DC, which was opened to the public in April 2004, though dedicated only in May 2004. The design of it is really interesting.
These two big geysers are supposed to represent the Atlantic and Pacific war fronts and the little fountains stand one for each state. The pillars surrounding the water are one for each state too, and named in the order in which the states joined the union, starting with Deleware. The long hole in the center of each pillar represents loss (of lives), the rings of leaves represent strength and each pillar is joined to the other by strong intertwined metal wires to represent unity.
The golden wall right in the center (will post a picture of this in the next few days) is the Freedom Wall with a field of 4000 stars for the 400,000 people who lost their lives in the war. The radiant white building behind is the Washington memorial and to the other side is the Lincoln memorial.

yes ian, the place is huge. i really liked it.
